What Is a Point Cloud?

A point cloud is a collection of spatially located data points representing visible surfaces in a captured environment. Depending on the workflow, color or imagery may also be associated with the dataset.

Multiple scan positions are normally registered into a common coordinate system so the environment can be viewed and reviewed as a coordinated whole. Registration quality, organization and coverage should be considered against the intended project use.

A point cloud is not automatically a BIM model or CAD drawing. It is a spatial reference from which those deliverables may be developed when the modeling or documentation scope is defined.

Project takeaway

Define the physical scope, intended use, required deliverables and review criteria before capture begins. The technology should serve those requirements.
