What Is 3D Laser Scanning?
3D laser scanning records the visible surfaces of a physical environment as spatial data. A scanner is positioned at multiple locations so complicated rooms, buildings, equipment areas or sites can be captured from different viewpoints.
The individual positions are then registered into a coordinated point-cloud dataset. That dataset may be reviewed directly or used as a reference for existing-condition documentation, BIM, CAD or other agreed project deliverables.
A useful scanning scope starts with the intended decision. Project area, access, visibility, registration requirements, desired outputs and downstream use all affect how the work should be planned.
Define the physical scope, intended use, required deliverables and review criteria before capture begins. The technology should serve those requirements.
